JOIN THE MIDDLE-EARTH ROLE PLAYING LIST!
The Middle-earth Role Playing list is an e-mail discussion group. It is the main on-line forum for people who play MERP.
This list emerged out of two earlier on-line MERP discussion groups:
merpl@plearn.edu and merp@silent-tower.org
THESE LISTS ARE NO LONGER ACTIVE
There's also a message board with links called the Middle Earth Roleplaying Network.

MUSH/MUD/IRC SITES
There are a number of multi-user on-line role playing environments set in Middle-earth. While the rule systems they use are different from MERP, the content of many of them is influenced by the MERP modules.
Beleriand MUSH Homepage
"Beleriand is a virtual environment and game where we have tried to recreate the world of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth books. The action of Beleriand specifically takes place in the First Age (as told in The Silmarillion and The History of Middle-earth series), when the good guys were stronger and brighter, when the bad guys were bigger and badder--in short, this is Middle-earth at its height! This is the time of the War of the Jewels, the fantastic struggle of the Free Peoples against the awesome power of the great Vala Morgoth and his minions. You are invited to join in the action, by creating a character which represents a citizen of the world of Middle-earth, such as an Elf, Dwarf, Man, or Orc, and interacting with other players portraying other roles in the same environment."
Elendor MUSH
"Elendor is the Premiere J.R.R. Tolkien based MUSH with over 1600 players over 5700 rooms, and one of the top 3 in activity based on Amberyl's automated MUSH list. Founded in 1991, Elendor enjoys a wide range of users from all backgrounds and a well designed world. However with our recent upgrade in equipment, we are growing rapidly, adding new areas and commands."
Middle-earth Play-by-Mail
This is a strategic role playing game (i.e., a player plays a particular "nation" of Middle-earth, rather than an individual adventurer) hosted by Game Systems, Inc. (GSI), which offers campaigns set in three time periods: ca. TA 1650, ca. TA 2950, and ca. FA 1000. The site includes several articles, especially on the Fourth Age setting. For Middle-earth PBM hosts in other languages, click here.

"MUME is a multi user role-playing game based upon J.R.R. Tolkien's creation, Middle Earth, that has been running since fall '91. The action takes place in the late Third Age, before The Hobbit and after the loss of the One Ring by Sauron. The key of Erebor was just found by Gandalf in Dol Guldur and all the epic tales narrated in The Lord of the Rings may take place."
Two Towers
"The Two Towers is a challenging online realtime multiplayer roleplaying game set within Tolkien's world. Once you join, you can meet new people, go on dangerous quests, solve intricate puzzles, make friends and enemies...anything you can imagine! AND ITS FREE! Thats right. This intricate and lively virtual world is 100% free!"
